Why Is My Roof So Squishy?

The other day we were on a roof for an inspection when one of us had to quickly step to a different section due to how squishy, saggy, and even sounding like it was cracking beneath our feet it was. We never recommend walking on your own roof and instead leaving that to a licensed pro like us, RRR Roofing, but as a homeowner you'll wonder "Why is my roof so squishy?!"

A squishy and saggy roof can be a cause for concern, as it may indicate structural issues or damage to your roof. Here are some common reasons why a roof might feel squishy and saggy underfoot:

1. Water Damage: One of the most common reasons for a squishy and saggy roof is water damage. If your roof has leaks or poor drainage, water can seep into the roofing materials, causing them to become soft and weakened. Over time, this can lead to sagging and even rot.

2. Rotting Roof Decking: The roof decking, which is typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), can rot when exposed to moisture over an extended period. Rotting roof decking can lose its structural integrity, resulting in a sagging roof.

3. Insufficient Roof Support: If your roof lacks proper support or was constructed with subpar materials, it may not be able to withstand the weight of people walking on it. This can lead to sagging and damage over time.

4. Age of Roofing Materials: Roofs have a limited lifespan, and as they age, the materials can deteriorate and become less sturdy. Older roofing materials are more susceptible to sagging and damage.

5. Improper Installation: If the roof was not installed correctly, it may develop issues over time. Poor installation can lead to uneven weight distribution, weak spots, and sagging.

6. Accumulation of Debris: Debris such as leaves, branches, and other materials can accumulate on the roof, creating a heavy load that may lead to sagging. Additionally, debris can trap moisture, exacerbating water damage.

7. Structural Issues: In some cases, the structural components of the roof, such as trusses or rafters, may have problems like rot or damage, which can result in a sagging roof.

If you notice your roof is squishy and saggy, it's crucial to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage and potential safety hazards. It's advisable to consult with a professional roofing contractor or structural engineer who can assess the condition of your roof, identify the underlying cause, and recommend the necessary repairs or replacement.

Ignoring roof problems can lead to more extensive and costly repairs down the line, as well as potential safety risks. Regular roof maintenance and inspections can help detect issues early and extend the lifespan of your roof.
